Press Release
For the group exhibition Najaarsparade, held at BMB Projectruimte in Amsterdam, I presented a number of new figurative works from a variety of sculptural series. The work Happiness (2025) is an unglazed, high and reduction fired ceramic sculpture. This deliberately 'naked' figure, presented in its most vulnerable form, exhibits all of the evidence of this figure's production processes; the scars of its origin and creation, and the idiosyncratic personality of chance occurences. This purposefully unhewn, iconographic figurative work is made to a scale and in a posture that references both ancient sculpture as well as contemporary popular imagery. These are combined with a personal approach to making and creation, and a visualisation of my own thoughts and feelings on social and cultural issues. This is an approach brought to much of my work and is similarly present in other works presented in this exhibition. Other Origin (Black Pink) (2025) for instance, is a new interpretation of an ongoing series which acts to present a stylised, universally recognised image of the human form with a continuing material investigation using clay and ceramics in all its manifestations.
